New ‘Rocky IV’ Director’s Cut Will Be Missing A Character – NPR Weekend Edition

Sylvester Stallone is revisiting Rocky IV with a director’s cut, which will edit out a robot maid. Cartoon Network’s J. Christopher Arrison is sad, and explains his feelings to NPR’s Scott Simon.

(Imitating Rocky Balboa) Yo, Paulie, kiss that birthday gift goodbye.

This week, Sylvester Stallone announced he’s concocting a new director’s cut of “Rocky IV,” the 1985 installment of the film franchise in which America’s heavyweight hero heads to the Soviet Union – that’s a country that used to exist just below Finland – to fight the fearsome Ivan Drago and avenge the death of Apollo Creed. Spoiler alert – another beloved character won’t make it – not B.J. Leiderman, who does our theme music – no, SICO, the robot that Rocky gives as a birthday present to his brother-in-law Paulie. Mr. Stallone says SICO will be edited out of the new cut.

J. Christopher Arrison is already in mourning. He’s a writer and producer for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim and joins us now. Thanks so much for being with us.

J CHRISTOPHER ARRISON: Oh, thanks for having me.

SIMON: We’re going hear a bit of SICO’s performance, if that’s what we’re going to call it. But why don’t you remind us, tell us about this robot?

ARRISON: Well, this robot appears in “Rocky IV” out of the dark. A song accompanies SICO rolling into the room. And he actually says, happy birthday, Paulie.

(SOUNDBITE OF FILM, “ROCKY IV”)

ROBERT DOORNICK: (As SICO) Please make a wish.

ARRISON: Paulie is at first kind of miffed by this gift, kind of perplexed. But by the end, he programs it from its gender setting from normal, as he says, to female. And in a – with a modern lens, it’s maybe not the most tasteful thing or a dignified end for SICO’s journey because SICO, in real life, is a very useful robot at the time. It was a robot that helped kids with autism. And that’s part of the reason why Stallone put SICO into the movie.

SIMON: So this was a real-life robot. Why did I not know that?

ARRISON: Yes, yes. That’s how – so SICO was introduced to his son. And Stallone was so taken by it that he put him in the movie. I’m calling him SICO, but SICO is genderless obviously.

SIMON: I’m impressed by the fact that SICO was invented to help people.

ARRISON: Yes.

SIMON: I find that very moving, and maybe SICO should have been in there to help someone, not just, you know, serve Paulie his beer.

ARRISON: The robot is very much a punchline. It’s been parodied many times over the years. Probably the most famous one is in the show “Family Guy.”

SIMON: Well…

ARRISON: You sound sad about this.

SIMON: I am a little – well, let’s just put it this way. I’m very uncomfortable with people trying to rewrite history.

ARRISON: Right (laughter). Right. Yeah. I’m curious what he’ll do about the rest of the movie because it’s such a American, jingoistic – you know, he fights the Russian – who is very much the Terminator with blond, spiky hair. And Rocky bests him on his home turf on Christmas Day, no less, and delivers this very stirring speech – (imitating Rocky Balboa) like, if you guys are like this and we’re like this, then maybe together we’re like this.

SIMON: You know, I just want to point out, Mr. Arrison, that Rocky delivered that speech, and four short years later, the Soviet Union fell apart.

ARRISON: You’re not wrong. I think, you know, Reagan, Gorbachev and Stallone should all take a bow.

THIS IS OUR RESPONSE 

Not only has SICO the robot gained a considerable following over the past 35 years, but his worldwide travels on behalf of the biggest corporations has also contributed to inspiring millions of people to watch – and continue to watch – Rocky IV.

It appears that Sly has misinterpreted the long-term value of “Pauli’s Robot.” 

Firstly. SICO IS NOT A PROP. Neither is he a limited actor. SICO is a socio-psychological phenomenon, who engages and bonds with humans from all cultures, creating deep and lasting relationships.

Secondly, as a purpose-driven company, SICO’s earnings contribute to our ability to donate the robot’s services to hospitals, schools, rehab & senior centers. While our other corporate clients make it possible for SICO to continue his Goodwill work, I would like to encourage you NOT to edit out Paulie’s robot from your Director’s Cut as though removing a prop. By eliminating SICO, you are removing an iconic public relations tool.

DISAPPOINTING A LARGE FANBASE

On behalf of SICO’s fans, and on behalf of the millions of children who have been positively impacted by the world’s first & most active Social Robot, I ask that you reconsider your decision. If anything, why not contemplate shooting a couple of additional scenes with SICO to let the viewers discover SICO’s real-life mission by showing the Robot visiting a school or hospital?

The many days spent with you on the set were quite enjoyable. In truth, you liked SICO, and we all had a numerous impromptu moments on the set, playing games on visitors and guests, including a funny tease involving Brigitte Nielsen. SICO was so well liked that you actually added a very entertaining scene with Paulie (later edited out as often happens).

You knew that SICO evolved from my work in the field of Special Education. You knew that he was a psychologically-designed, Surrogate Communications tool for working with the Learning Disabled, Autistic, Elderly and other Special Needs groups. The connection between our work with Autistic children, and your own son re-enforced your attraction to SICO.

Since it’s infancy back in the early 1970’s, IRI has been a purpose-driven research group with the principal mission of delivering its free services to children throughout the world. Thanks to Rocky IV, SICO grew in popularity, developed a large following, and became known as “The Robot With A Heart.”

Our funding mechanism for these free services typically comes from those who hire SICO. The robot’s many activities included a season on the Soap Opera, “Days Of Our Lives,” an ABC TV Special celebrating Walt Disney’s EPCOT with the late Danny Kaye and Drew Barrymore, as an MC of The Spanish Music Awards, Command Performances at The White House, The International Olympic Committee, The United Nations, before Their Majesties, The King & Queen of Jordan as well as His Royal Highness Sheikh Mohammed, Ruler of Dubai.

SICO’s career included Music Videos, Concert Tours, countless cameo appearances on sitcoms, and so much more that SICO was eventually accepted as the first and only non-human SAG/AFTRA card-bearing member. SICO the robot also became the first card-bearing Union Member.

But nothing has compared to the claims to fame SICO enjoyed, thanks to Sly’s decision to incorporate the Robot in the Rocky IV installment. As SICO continued his global travels and Goodwill Tours (SICO greets people in multiple languages), millions of fans recognized the Rocky Robot, asking for souvenir photos and autographs. Countless more were introduced to the Rocky Movies after meeting SICO.

We are grateful for it all.

Not only has Sly’s original choice to write SICO into several Rocky IV scenes paid for countless visits to children’s hospitals, schools, clinics, rehab and senior centers and orphanages, but also the subsequent SAG/AFTRA earnings have brought countless smiles on the faces of sick or orphaned children who were thrilled to meet the Rocky IV robot.

While SICO became the busiest entertainment, therapeutic, educational and corporate spokesbot in the world, SICO continues to be referred to as “The Rocky IV Robot.”

THE ROCKY IV LEGACY

Following the release of the Rocky IV movie, SICO was invited to host The World Design Expo in Nagoya, Japan “as The Rocky IV Robot who specializes in working with children.” For an entire summer, millions of visitors came to Nagoya to meet the Rocky IV Robot, take souvenir photos with their children, and walk past the displayed autographed boxing gloves, which Sly and Dolph generously donated to SICO at the conclusion of the film shoot.

Before he passed on, the world renowned artist Keith Haring (my then neighbor in SOHO, NYC) created two paintings of SICO, after SICO appeared at his SOHO Opening at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery.

SICO has continued to evolve functionally and aesthetically. Today, SICO is the world’s finest programmable & remotely controllable Robot. Under the skillful control of his Animators, SICO delivers Keynote Addresses and hosts events on behalf of his Corporate Sponsors through a combination of programmed features and memorable extemporaneous interactions.

In 1993, IRI’s Robot Olympia was given the role of Goodwill Ambassador for the International Olympic Committee based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Robot Olympia resided at the Olympic Museum, greeting visiting VIPs and dignitaries, hosting annual events, as well as interacting with the general public (taking thousands of souvenir photos).

Olympia’s primary function was to welcome thousands of international visitors in a multitude of languages. As time goes on, science & sports have become partners in the pursuit of excellence. In various venues within the museum, Robot Olympia also addressed audiences on the sciences & technologies employed in all sports to enhance both performance & safety. The appealing combination of humor + easy to understand information helped Olympia “humanize” those technologies for the general public. 

ARCHITECTS OF THE FUTURE

While Robot Olympia was enjoyed by all visitors, Olympia was particularly loved by the children who surrounded him, clinging to his arms. When enough little ones gathered around, Olympia would call them all, “architects of the future,” explaining that they would each play important roles in finding new solutions for a healthier Spaceship Earth. To make the very large subject of science more relatable to these small ones, Robot Olympia explained that they “are never standing still.” Reciting figures, he helped them understand;

–The speed at which they were presently moving as their “Spaceship Earth” was rotating on its axis
–The speed at which they were then orbiting around the sun.
–The speed at which the Sun was orbiting around the center of the Milkyway Galaxy
–The speed at which the Galaxy was expanding throughout the Universe
–Yet, there they were, seemingly standing still, but in the time it took for Olympia to share these calculations, they had travelled hundreds of thousands of miles!

COUSTEAU & THE OLYMPICS

The Aqua-Lung was invented in Paris during the winter of 1942–1943 by two Frenchmen: the engineer Émile Gagnan and the Naval Lieutenant Jacques Cousteau. It allowed Cousteau and Gagnan to film and explore more easily underwater, an unknown environment that the world was already polluting.

In 2002, his son, Jean-Michel Cousteau, was selected to be the first person to represent the environment in an Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee added environment to sport and culture as the third principle of the Olympics.

The environment calls for our help. Inspiring the young ones – our Architects of the Future  – to use technology to find solutions for our imperiled planet has always been our mission because they are our hope. A keynote is a talk that sets the tone for the conference. It is usually the first general session presentation of the conference, or the first speech of the day.

SOME HIGHLY TECHNICAL SPEAKERS CAN SUCK THE ENERGY OUT OF A ROOM.

We make sure that does not happen.

Some speakers focus on motivation and inspiration, and can address any kind of audience. Others are more topical – they may specialize in sales, marketing, finance, etc., and can deliver content that is more relevant to a specific audience. Others focus on specific topics, say, coping with change. No matter the subject, we however, use humor.

There’s no right or wrong answer as to the type of keynote that will work for a particular group of people. The conference organizer has to consider the audience, whether they share the same needs and motivations, etc. to try to choose a speaker that will work for most or all of them. Humor and a professional but non-threatening demeanor has proven to be highly effective.

Keynote speakers need to have experience on stage and the ability to connect with an audience on an emotional level.

GETTING PERSONAL

The keynote address may entail an opening Keynote and closing Keynote speaker. An opening Keynote speaker is brought in to set the underlying tone and summarize the core message or most important revelation of the event. A closing Keynote speaker will be engaged to end a conference on a high note and leave audiences with a sense of optimism. If an event is held over a longer period, it is not unusual to have a different Keynote Speaker for each day of the event.

ROBOT SEALS

Mental healthcare of elderly people is a common problem in advanced countries. Recently, high technology has developed robots for use not only in factories but also for our living environment. In particular, human-interactive robots for psychological enrichment, which provide services by interacting with humans while stimulating their minds, are rapidly spreading. Such robots not only simply entertain but also render assistance, guide, provide therapy, educate, enable communication, and so on. Robot therapy, which uses robots as a substitution for animals in animal-assisted therapy and activity, is a new application of robots and is attracting the attention of many researchers and psychologists.

The seal robot named Paro (yep…looks like a Baby Seal) was developed especially for robot therapy and was used at hospitals and facilities for elderly people in several countries. Recent research has revealed that robot therapy has the same effects on people as animal therapy. In addition, it is being recognized as a new method of mental healthcare for elderly people.
